A VERSE AT A TIME
TOPIC: PURPOSE AND YOUR QUESTIONS
TEXT: NEHEMIAH 1:1-11
KEY VERSE: Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem. Nehemiah 1:2(NIV)
We face questions about our faith, personal struggles, and meaning in life. These questions reveal the nature of our hearts, values, and motives, giving a glimpse into our desires, priorities, and fears. As Christians, our questions range from inquiries about God’s word and purposes to practical concerns about living out our faith in an ever-changing world.
But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” Genesis 15:2(NIV)
His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” John 9:2 (NIV)
Our questions arise from our circumstances, experiences, and uncertainties about the future. They reveal our concerns, fears, and anxieties, as well as our knowledge and faith in God or our disbelief.
“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?‘ Judges 6:13(NIV)
And David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them,” he answered. “You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue.” 1 Samuel 30:8(NIV)
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” Matthew 16:13(NIV)
“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. John 6:67(NIV)
Though living comfortably, Nehemiah was concerned about the condition of his brethren left behind in Jerusalem. His reaction to the news of the state of Jerusalem revealed his love for his nation and desire for its well-being. His concerns inspired his desire to pray and to take action to rebuild the walls. David’s arrival at the battlefield and his response to Goliath’s threats revealed his heart as a warrior leader.
David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 1 Samuel 17:26(NIV)
You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. Matthew 12:34(NIV)
