Topic: Faithful In Small Things

Text: 1 Samuel 16:14-23

Key Verse: “A man named Jesse who lives in Bethlehem has a son who can play the harp,” one official said. “He’s a brave warrior, he’s good-looking, he can speak well, and the Lord is with him.” – 1 Samuel 16:18 CEV

Living intentionally between where you are now and destiny is simply being faithful in small things. Life is all about serving God and man.

God’s plan for you is excellent, but you will receive opportunities to prove yourself in small tasks on your way there. Samuel had anointed David, but his first job description came not because of a king’s vacancy but rather to serve the incumbent. The qualities that prepared him was his faithfulness to small tasks he had received in secret.

I often wonder why God does not show us our future in detail, as shown to Joseph, thinking that such knowledge will encourage us to wait. I have also realized that dreams or a prophetic word are not enough if you do not prepare your heart to do the work on your way to the promise.

Joseph had a revelation of the future, but the opportunities that came were tasks to serve others. Many of us are quick to covet leadership positions without proving ourselves as servants.

Anyone who can be trusted in little matters can also be trusted in important matters. But anyone dishonest in little matters will be dishonest in important matters. And if you cannot be trusted with what belongs to someone else, who will give you something that will be your own? – Luke 16:10,12 CEV

Please observe that people knew David’s identity, including his family background. When we live double lives, one in public and another on the home front, we are shortchanging ourselves because the person who will introduce us in public may have observed your life, character, and values in your family.

David’s father had to release him to the king’s service; imagine if David had been rebellious to his parents, this would have been an excellent opportunity to testify against him. Maintain a good testimony at home, as a spouse, parent, sibling, or servant. Your testimonial is being written by those you may never know personally.

David had skills and character and a great personality. It is not enough to be Holy; do you have skills for service? Every position of authority in leadership, both in the society or ministry, has a job description and the qualification required.

Don’t just pray, do more in personal development, build character and acquire new competencies. No one is too old to go back to school or, at best, take short courses. The more you train, the more your value appreciates.

After ten years of graduation without a job, your chances of being employable diminishes if you do not upgrade yourself. Invest in your future by investing in programs that help you assess your strengths and weaknesses; you can change your career path in midlife if you realize that you are a square peg in a round hole.

Staying relevant and valuable to others is proof that you are intentional. We are in the season of a new normal where processes are changing; you can’t remain in the past; you must press into the unknown with God.

David first left his home to serve as a music minister, but he ended up as Saul’s armor-bearer in time because his other competencies became evident.

David went to Saul and started working for him. Saul liked him so much that he put David in charge of carrying his weapons. Not long after this, Saul sent another message to Jesse: “I like David. Please let him stay with me.” – 1 Samuel 16:21-22 CEV

I am creating something new. There it is! Do you see it? I have put roads in deserts, streams in thirsty lands. – Isaiah 43:19 CEV

Certain seasons in your life will not come until you change location; while you wait for God to move you, invest in yourself, be the best version of yourself, improve your looks even if all you have to do is wear a smile.

Prayer

Father Lord, I pray that you will stir up our hearts to identify the different areas of our life that need improvement as we prepare for the throne reserved for us, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
