Topic: Counseled by dreams
Text: Psalm 16: 5-11
Key Verse: I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; Indeed, my heart (mind) instructs me in the night. Psalm 16:7(AMP)*
As powerful as the mind is, we don’t rely only on the mind for counsel. God counsels and instructs man in the night season. The word dream appears 87 times in the old and new testament of the Bible. The first time a dream is mentioned in the Bible is when Abimelech received a warning from God.
But God came to Abimelech in a dream and said, “You have taken a married woman, and for this, you will die!” Genesis 20:3
God spoke to Abimelech in another dream and said: I know you are innocent. That’s why I kept you from sleeping with Sarah and doing anything wrong. Her husband is a prophet. Let her go back to him, and his prayers will save you from death. But if you don’t return her, you and all your people will die. Genesis 20:6-7
The dictionary defines dreams as a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person\’s mind during sleep. When you have a flow of images while asleep it is a dream, but if you have a flow of images while awake, it is a vision.
Abimelech received instruction and counsel through dreams even though he didn’t have a personal relationship with God. This means that God is willing to instruct every man through dreams if they desire and expect it. Sometimes we are ignorant about the causes of situations in our lives, and without counsel from God, we may not take appropriate actions. At very critical moments of my life, l have been counseled by dreams, decisions that seemed right on face value were traps, God warned me through dreams, and my understanding and accurate interpretation saved my life.
God desires to reveal his presence to us, and we are often not aware of it. Jacob in his travel had a dream that awakened his consciousness to the presence of God in his life.
At sunset he stopped for the night and went to sleep, resting his head on a large rock. 12 In a dream he saw a ladder[a] that reached from earth to heaven, and God’s angels were going up and down on it. Genesis 28:11-12
Jacob woke up suddenly and thought, “The Lord is in this place, and I didn’t even know it.” Genesis 28:16
Jacob received a word from God during that dream that marked the beginning of a deeper walk with God. Do you long to hear from God? Are you careful to recall your dreams and do you know the meaning of those dreams? Not every dream is from God, but don’t be afraid of dreams or disregard them, test the dreams to determine if they are from God. Dreams are messengers, you cannot determine whether its message is good or evil until you receive them.
Sometimes in the face of difficulty or danger, we are overwhelmed by the things we see with our physical eyes, and we doubt God’s protection, provision, or faithfulness to his promises until our spiritual eyes are opened either to see visions or dreams.
And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. 2 Kings 6: 17
As children of God, we must be conscious of the existence of the spiritual and not live only by the five senses. There is more information you need, to have a winning mindset, fear disappeared the moment the servant saw the chariots of fire. Your fears will disappear when you see as Jesus sees!
The Lord said: Later, I will give my Spirit to everyone. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will have dreams, and your young men will see visions. Joel 2:28
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit ought to release our dreams, visions, and prophecies. This promise is for you; claim it now in prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen
Prayer
1. Father, counsel me through my dreams, expose dangerous situations in my marriage, health, business, relationships, and ministry, in Jesus’ name, amen.
2. Lord I want a deeper walk with you, reveal yourself to be by the power of the Holy Spirit, through dreams, visions, and prophecy in Jesus’ name. Amen
3. Father, open my eyes to see the provision you have made for my safety, provision, and deliverance in Jesus’ name. Amen
