BORN TO BE KING

TOPIC: BORN TO BE KING

TEXT: MATTHEW 2:1-11

KEY VERSE: They asked people, “Where is the child who has been born to be the King of the Jews? We saw the star that shows he was born. We saw it rise in the sky in the East and have come to worship him.” MATTHEW 2:6(ERV)

Jesus was born to be a King, as prophesied by several prophets, including Isaiah. He was born of a virgin, just as Isaiah had predicted. The wise men from the East saw a star in the sky that signified the birth of a King and followed it to Israel. King Herod also learned of the prophecy and wanted to find the Baby King to eliminate the potential threat to his rulership.

For to us, a child is born. To us, a son is given. The authority to rule will rest on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no limit to his authority and no end to the peace he brings. He will rule on David’s throne and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from now on into eternity. The zeal of the Lord of Armies will accomplish this.Isaiah 9:6-7(EHV)

The wise men discovered that the Baby King was born in Bethlehem, just as Micah had prophesied. They found the Baby and worshipped him, presenting him with costly gifts. King Herod pretended to want to worship the Baby King, too, but God exposed his true intentions.

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Micah 5:2(KJV)

Jesus had to pass a test to qualify to sit on the throne and be called the Son of God. He made choices that pleased the Father and humbled himself to die on the Cross to fulfil the Father’s will for the world’s salvation. He was God, with all the rights of divinity, but he chose to be King among humanity out of love.

But stripped Himself [of all privileges and rightful dignity], so as to assume the guise of a servant (slave), in that He became like men and was born a human being. Phillippians 2:7(AMPC)

As we celebrate his birth, we should honour him with true worship for his humility and sacrifice. He now has the authority to rule, and his name is above all names in heaven and on earth. He wants to be the King of our hearts, not just of the Jews, and we should surrender ourselves to him as our saviour King. (Philippians 2:9-11)

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your son to take on the form of man to be a saviour king. Teach me to give him the worship he deserves as I surrender my heart to him. Amen.

  1. Children from royal families have their births announced and celebrated. Jesus too was announced but his was centuries before by prophets, prior to conception by angels, at his birth again by angels, by wise men who observed nature. The Father used humanity, divinity and reached all classes of people to announce Jesus birth. What a great king was born!
