Divine Direction

Topic: Divine Direction

Text: 1 Samuel 9: 25-27

Key Verse: As Saul, his servant, and Samuel were getting near the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us, but you stay, because I have a message from God for you.” – 1 Samuel 9:27

God’s plan for your life requires divine direction. Certain things may be obvious, but more of the program requires specific instructions. Saul was in the place where God wanted him to be, but his success in staying the course required strict compliance to the plan God had in place.

God’s message for Saul was a personal one; Saul had to separate himself from his servant to receive it. Many times, what God has for you will be first whispered to you in your quiet times with him. The public announcement is usually for the benefit of others to confirm what you have heard already in secret as you waited on Him.

Develop the habit of personal devotion with God alone. Get a journal to record what you will hear from God about the future; there are the words that will give you divine direction.

I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; Indeed, my heart (mind) instructs me in the night. – Psalm 16:7

No one fulfilled God’s purpose for his generation without the discipline of private prayer and listening to God. David spent his days in the wilderness worship and prayer while minding his sheep. The whole of chapter 119 of Psalms documents the importance David attached to the word of God.

Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

The unfolding of Your [glorious] words give light; Their unfolding gives understanding to the simple (childlike).

Establish my footsteps in [the way of] Your word; Do not let any human weakness have power over me [causing me to be separated from You]. Psalm 119:105,130,133

Moses had no one to instruct him on how God planned to rescue the children of Israel out of Egypt; he had to learn to hear the voice of God.

Joshua could not take over from Moses because the task ahead of him was enormous, but the word of the Lord came to him for direction.

Now it happened after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ servant (attendant), saying,

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall read [and meditate on] it day and night, so that you may be careful to do [everything] by all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will be successful. Joshua 1:1,8

This year determine to change your protocol for Bible study; read the Bible not as a duty but as a means to hear from God daily. You call some friends and relatives every day, but you can stay one whole week without opening your Bible. You prefer to read five different devotionals and join several online prayers, but have no time alone with God to receive a message from him to you, Repent.

No matter how sure you are of God’s will, some details will unfold to you daily and as the situations demand.

“I can do nothing on my initiative or authority. Just as I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just (fair, righteous, unbiased) because I do not seek My own will, but only the will of Him who sent Me”. John 5:30

When, however, the Spirit comes, who reveals the truth about God, he will lead you into all the truth. He will not speak on his authority, but he will speak of what he hears and will tell you of things to come. John 16:13

Today, you don’t need a Samuel to deliver the message; you have the Bible and the Holy Spirit to give you divine direction. When God chooses to use a prophecy or dream to instruct, it will be a rare occurrence and not the only means you can hear from God.

Make no assumptions, take no unnecessary risks we live in unprecedented times, wait on God and receive instructions for the days ahead.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. – Proverbs 3:5-6

Prayers

Father, l thank you for your plans for this season of my life; as they unfold before me, give me a listening ear. Give me the discipline to wait on you to receive divine direction, deliver me from presumption, and, depending on the wisdom of my heart, teach me daily to wait for your word in Jesus’ name.

  1. Dear Ada, how I thank you. What you share here is exactly my experience in life!

“Develop the habit of personal devotion with God alone. Get a journal to record what you will hear from God about the future; there are the words that will give you divine direction.” How true! How important! Thanks a lot! Arve
