Topic: Victory over different fears
Text: 1Samuel 16:1-13
Key verse: But Samuel asked, “How can I do that? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”
God has not given us the spirit of fear yet several believers struggle with fear. I have battled and overcome several kinds of fear through the word of God. My first challenge was the fear of darkness, called Nyctophobia. As a young girl in secondary school l could not use the bathroom at night unaccompanied. After l got saved l still lived in fear until l discovered the meaning of 1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. l memorized the scripture and confessed it as l walked into a dark room or outdoors until l overcame that fear.
In our text today, God commanded Samuel to go and anoint another king in place of Saul. Samuel feared for his life, and he turned to the Lord to confess his fear. God gave him instructions on how to obey him discreetly. Samuel stepped out in obedience to God without fear. Faith in the word of God is the key to victory over Thanatophobia, the fear of death.
After l lost three very close relatives in quick succession, l struggled with the fear of death. I had dreams of a Lion always following me in my dreams, l prayed and resisted the spirit of death for a while until one day after l had prayed l asked the Lord to give me a word which will be my Sword of the spirit against the spirit of the fear of death. He asked me to read Isaiah 35, l read until l got to verse 9: No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there.
That verse leaped up at me, l screamed: “no lion or ravenous beast shall walk on my land again”. From that day, l took authority over that spirit and declared that word every time the enemy showed up again. Like David, l can only testify about the armor l have used, the sword of the spirit, the word of God is my preferred weapon against fear. I have enjoyed peace over that fear when l travel or anyone close to me is ill. You can have victory too in Jesus’ name!
Samuel trusted the Lord and he stepped out in obedience, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Fear God more than your fears. Seek his word, stand on it, and experience victory over the enemy in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Prayer: Father please teach me to fear you in Jesus’ name.
